Canon invited me to an first look hands-on event of the newly announced Canon EOS R. I decided to vlog the day and share some initial thoughts on the new full-frame mirrorless offering from Canon. It’s been quite a while since I’ve shot photos with a Canon and even longer since I shot video with one, so I was eager to see how far they’ve come now that they’re finally taking the mirrorless industry seriously.
Overall, I liked the camera. It felt great in the hands and comfortable to use. There are some great specs to it in some areas, along with some huge disappointments in others. I love that Canon are finally implementing 4K video in more of their cameras, however it’s still a massive mistake to have such a huge crop factor on the output. The photography specs of this camera are mostly great, however (as usual), it’s the video specs that are handicapped.
I’m intrigued in the direction of the RF mount and the lenses yet to be released, but unsure whether it’s enough to get Canon back on top in this industry that has become ever more competitive in the last few years.
